HBO responded to Bill Maher’s use of the N-word in a statement calling his actions “inexcusable” and “tasteless”

Read the full statement below:

“Bill Maher’s comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless. We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show.”

Bill Maher has since apologized for his poor choice of words.  He said, “Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”

For anyone who didn’t hear his comment.  Maher dropped an N-bomb while speaking with his guest Sen. Ben Sasse.

Maher said, “I’ve got to get to Nebraska more.”

“You’re welcome. We’d love to have you work in the fields with us,” joked Sasse.

“Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n**ger,” responded Maher.

Ben Sasse reprimanded Maher in a series of tweets:

  1. No he should not lose his job. Bill is the real deal. We all say things without thinking in the spur of the moment.

  2. He will be around a while. He tells the truth. Mean people do not get our empathy. Go, and be miserable together…

  3. It is ridiculous to even entertain the idea the Bill Maher could be in anyway racist or disrespectful to minorities. We should NOT FALL for another GOP tactics, trying to get rid of one of their biggest critics !

  4. Bill Maher has proved throughout the years that he is not a racist or a sexist. He is a comedian first and foremost and HBO’s reaction to his use of the “N” word and their subsequent action was justified. Bill apologized and that should be the end of it…

  5. Maher is a form of shock jock type…one I agree with more than I disagree with but still he is there to say things that nobody will have the nerve to say…in trying to be funny and serious at the same time. It would be the height of hypocrisy to help him build his career off that brand of humor, and then move to fire him over this particular incursion. I say he apologized and that should be that.

  6. LOVE BILL, I HEARD HIM SAY THE WORD WHICH I WOULD NEVER SAY BUT HE IS A COMEDIAN . I NEVER MISS OR TAPE HIM..THE ONLY REASON I HAVE HBO IS TO WATCH MY BILL.

  7. No, he should not be fired. He was trying to be funny & it was in bad taste. He apologized & that should be the end of it. He is a breath of fresh air in these troubling times. Surely, HBO has better things to do! Firing him would create a vacuum that no one could fill. If he went to another channel, we would simply watch him on that channel & ignore HBO.
