Hillary Clinton has been promoting her new book, What Happened, a memoir of her 2016 Presidential Campaign. During her book tour, she placed the blame of her failure on a number of factors: FBI Director James Comey’s late intervention, her own mistakes, and the Russian interference of the voting process.
But Clinton also pointed too the deeply-seeded sexism that played a vital role in her defeat against Donald Trump. In an interview with the New York Times, Clinton discussed how misogyny is used as a tool to hold women back, whether or not people are aware of it.
Clinton elaborated on her remark. “The idea that women have to fit certain stereotypes; that’s a weight around the ankle of every ambitious woman I’ve ever met,” she said. “We get constant messaging our whole lives: You’re not thin enough, talented enough, smart enough. Your voice isn’t what we want to hear.”
According to Clinton, gender is a dominant theme in her memoir because she faced sexism at every turn during her presidential campaign. Reports conducted after the election showed that gender did play a role in weighing Trump and Clinton but not on the same scale because of varying attitudes toward gender.
In her book, Clinton is very open about the reality many women face in the United States. She wrote, “Both sexism and misogyny are endemic in America,” and added, “If you need convincing, just look at the YouTube comments or Twitter replies when a woman dares to voice a political opinion or even just share an anecdote from her own lived experience. People hiding in the shadows step forward just far enough to rip her apart.”
Clinton admitted the experience has been “humiliating” and “cruel” because when a woman announces the running for office, “The analysis of her face, her body, her voice, her demeanor; the diminishment of her stature, her ideas, her accomplishments, her integrity.”
When you think about it, Donald Trump has made far more mistakes than Clinton and yet, she was battered with criticism over every detail from the way she dressed and her appearance to her email scandal. Trump is accused of sexual assault, hiding secrets in the White House, misuse of funds
