When the White House has run out of ways to hide or spin a story, they turn to Kellyanne Conway, seemingly just to make things so bad that the entire incident transcends reality itself.
The news of Jared Kushner wanting to set up a secret communications channel with Russia has officially reached the Conway benchmark. It’s so bad, they’ve thrown their human grenade at the situation.
According to Conway, backchannels are perfectly normal. She suggests, citing senior military advisors, “Back channels like this are the regular course of business, and that’s really all that we know,” she said.
She even praises Kushner, saying “It’s very important to recognize that the president has expressed full confidence in Jared Kushner and also went on to note the considerable progress and very large important portfolio that Jared oversees here at the White House.”
Fox and Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade tried to get Conway to confirm reports on who wanted the secret channel. Fox claims it was the Russians while the New York Times says it was Kushner. There’s also the matter of one of the Russians that Kushner was working with had been blacklisted by the Intelligence Community. Conway refused to give an answer:
“Because there is no reason to, frankly. This entire thing is just a rush to judgment. We have been talking about this for about eight months and yet … it’s a lot easier to scream Russia, Russia, Russia every day.”
However, there was no reason for her to avoid the question. She just said that the secret channel didn’t matter, suggesting they are used frequently. So if it doesn’t matter, why not clarify? Even worse, she doesn’t even mention the fact that one of the Russians involved had been blacklisted. Conway’s sole job is to spin damaging news from the White House.
Instead, her damage control efforts are more damaging to Kushner’s credibility.
