Obama Issues Stern Warning to Zuckerberg, FB Founder Shamed

President Barack Obama pulled Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg aside at a meeting of world leaders in Peru in November telling him Facebook had to take the fake news and political disinformation on Facebook seriously.

Earlier Zuckerberg had dismissed notions of fake news on the site as “crazy” but has since acknowledged it has been a serious problem and last week admitted that Facebook had been manipulated and that the company will turn over to Congress more than 3,000 politically themed advertisements that were bought by suspected Russian operatives.

According to people who were briefed on the exchange, the Washington Post reports that Zuckerberg acknowledged the problem posed by fake news. However, he said those messages weren’t widespread on Facebook and that there was no easy solution.

Facebook vice president Elliot Shrage said, “We believe in the power of democracy, which is why we’re taking this work on elections integrity so seriously, and have come forward at every opportunity to share what we’ve found.”
