Donald Trump unilaterally announced a transgender military ban via Twitter and received a massive backlash from the American public as well as military officials. He recently made a move forward with his ban by sending the Pentagon instructions on how to enforce it.
However, Defense Secretary James Mattis is openly defying Trump’s ban. He stated on Tuesday that transgenders would continue serving in the military until experts conclude their study on the issue.
Mattis said in a statement:
“Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning the implementation of his policy direction.”
Mattis continued, “In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place.”
Considering this is an Obama-era policy, Trump must be furious that Mattis denied him.
Trump initially tweeted:
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.”
He added, “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
His claim about the “tremendous medical costs” was already debunked.
Do you’re proud of Mattis for standing up to Trump?
