From 2007 to 2015, there was a steep decline in the number of teen pregnancies in the U.S., all thanks to Obama-era teen pregnancy prevention programs.
Via Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services isn’t satisfied by empirical results. The conservatives working in the department — Charmaine Yoest, Teresa Manning, and Valerie Huber — all rely on conservative Christian values to make their decisions.
HHS just cut funding to 81 teen pregnancy programs, including the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Meagan Downy, an affiliate of the Children’s Hospital of L.A., released the notice she received:
“Due to changes in program priorities, it has been determined that it is in the best interest of the Federal government to no longer continue funding for the Providing Capacity Building Assistance to OAH Teen Pregnancy Prevention Grantees program.”
Downey told the Los Angeles Times:
“There’s been no substantive change in the federal government’s ‘best interest.’ The only thing that has changed is the appointment of some very extreme, misinformed appointees in HHS.”
Valerie Huber told PBS in 2016: “As public health experts and policymakers, we must normalize sexual delay more than we normalize teen sex, even with contraception.” The problem is teaching abstinence isn’t as effective as contraception, as proven by science — hence the reason Obama implemented the effective teen pregnancy programs.
